A variety of inhalants are popular among street drug users. They include nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”), amyl nitrite (“poppers”), butyl nitrate (“rush”), chloro-hydrocarbons (from aerosol sprays), and hydrocarbons (from glue and paint thinner.
Inhaling these harmful substances provides the user with a temporary “high” and then serious after-effects.
Symptoms of inhalant use:
Nausea and fatigue;
Coughing and nosebleeds;
Lack of coordination;
Violent behavior.
Health risks:
Suffocation; With glue or paint thinner, users may suffer permanent damage to the brain and nervous system.
An increased risk of violence.
