Booming Fitness Market

In addition to the Surgeon General¹s Healthy People 2010 national campaign, exercise is being promoted by health professionals to prevent and treat obesity and other chronic illnesses. Americans are becoming increasingly aware of the health benefits of exercise, leading to a surge in the fitness market.

While the total club membership in the U.S. grew 1.4 percent in 1999, totaling 29.8 million members, commercial club membership jumped 12 percent, reaching 15.4 million members. The commercial club market share grew from 46.4 percent in 1999 to 51.4 percent in 2000 (International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, Mar. 17, 2011). Also, Americans ages 35 and older represent the largest share of club memberships at 52 percent.

Exercise equipment sales also grew 6 percent in 1999, reaching $3.5 billion, and sales are expected to rise 7 to 8 percent in 2011.

While the sales of exercise equipment to commercial fitness facilities are steady, the sales of equipment for home use have grown.

One-third of the U.S. population owns and regularly uses exercise equipment at home (Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association, Mar. 30, 2011).
