What can Nurse Practitioners do? Family Nurse Practitioners provide primary care. They can perform, by some estimates, up to 85% of that of a Family Practice Physician. Medicaid has covered the services of Nurse Practitioners since 1990. Thirty-seven percent of HMO’s recognize Nurse Practitioners as primary care providers. VA hospitals all hire Nurse Practitioners. Nurse Practitioners work in the Public Health Sector and on Indian Reservations. In some states, Nurse Practitioners can open their own clinic with a practice agreement involving a local group of physicians. In almost all states Nurse Practitioners can write prescriptions, order lab tests and X-rays, and perform physical examinations.
