Fit for Life
Haddon also tells women not only to adopt positive attitudes, but also to live healthier lifestyles.

The advice she doles out for staying fit is much of the same sensible recommendations women hear from their family doctors — exercise three times a week, eat healthy, stop dieting, stop smoking and drink lots of water.

Changes don’t have to be drastic, Haddon points out. Start walking with a friend, eat only half the dessert you ordered and find time to do something for yourself — take a warm bath or sign up for a class you always wanted to take. “These are the things that keep you young,” she said.

Strong says she keeps young by eating healthy foods, exercising, surrounding herself with positive people and volunteering.

And when she decided to lose weight she had put on after an accident, she didn’t diet. Instead, she kept a lunchbox full of healthy snacks and water with her at all times so “when my schedule got hectic I wouldn’t reach for a Kit-Kat bar.” She also exercised in ways she enjoyed — lifting weights, and walking or doing aerobics.

Those are just the kinds of activities dietician Pascal Messier recommends for aging women. “One of the biggest considerations for women over 40 is osteoporosis. So, I make sure they’re getting at least 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day and I encourage weight-bearing activities, which means nothing is supporting your body as you exercise. For example, walking enhances bone growth better than swimming or bicycling,” she said.

Messier, the wellness coordinator at the National Institute for Fitness in Indianapolis, recommends exercising for 30 minutes a day, three times a week.

“Women after 40 are more at risk for heart disease than cancer, so they also really need to eat a healthy, balanced diet and cut out the fat,” Messier said.

Maintaining a Youthful Glow
As for skin care, both Haddon and Strong say you don’t have to spend a lot of money on expensive products, just wash your face with a mild cleansing agent, and use plenty of moisturizer and sunscreen.

Moisturizer becomes a necessity for women in their 40s, an age when their oil gland production slows down leaving them with drier skin, according to Dr. David Leffell, professor of dermatology at Yale University and author of “Total Skin.”

Using a moisturizer with alpha-hydroxy acids, which helps the skin shed, “can make things look fresher, particularly for women who have a lot of sun damage,” Leffell said.

The 40s are also a time when women need to pay close attention for signs of skin cancer, caused by the cumulative effect of the sun over the years.

And, if you smoke, stop. “Smoking aggravates the premature aging of the skin,” Leffell said.

Leffell also recommends wearing sunscreen, washing your face only once a day, not using soap on your face and keeping your skin care routine simple. In other words, don’t waste a lot of money on products promising the fountain of youth. The only products that are proven to help reduce the effects of aging are Retin A and Retinol, he says.

Most importantly, Strong says, pass on the beauty of aging to younger women.

“I feel secure, at peace, confident, mature, just basically comfortable with myself ? all the things I didn’t feel in my 20s and 30s. I can’t imagine, at this point in my life, being younger,” she said.

HGH or Human growth hormone is the hormone that successfully stimulates cell reproduction, growth. Purchase injectable human growth hormone supplement on this site and you may economize your money, time, energy.

Flip through a few women’s magazines and you’ll notice the subtle changes. Forty-three-year-old Melanie Griffith touting cosmetic lines. Top models from three decades ago gracing the covers as sexy and vibrant women again. A profile on Madonna giving birth at age 41.

And it’s not just the rich and famous who are embracing their 40s, and looking fabulous while they’re doing it.

Gaining Grace
“I’m getting older. I can either be depressed about it or accept it with open arms and say ‘this is a new and exciting period in my life.’ So I decided to announce to the world that there was nothing wrong with women aging,” said 41-year-old Buddy Strong from Chicago. Strong, a stand-up comedian, actor and former Chicago Bulls cheerleader, recently took home the national All-American Woman beauty title in the 40 and over category.

That’s just the kind of attitude Dayle Haddon, who at 52 is the face of L’Oreal’s Plentitude line and author of “Ageless Beauty,” hopes to see all women embrace.

“The point of life is not to hold on to the past, but to let go gracefully and move on to the next phase of your life. I tell women to think about not what they’ve lost, but what they’ve gained,” said Haddon, who recently became the beauty and wellness coordinator for CBS’s “The Early Show.”

Haddon found herself in a precarious situation after suddenly losing her husband and financial stability 10 years ago. As a 40-something single mother, she tried to return to her modeling and acting career, but was told she was too old.

Instead of giving up, she dug in and came up with research showing the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population is women between ages 45 and 55. She soon persuaded beauty product companies that someone needs to speak to these women, and then she founded Dayle Haddon Concepts to help women over 40 realize age is not a hindrance.

The first step to looking and feeling great, Haddon says, is discovering yourself.

“In our society, we devalue contemplation — it’s just do, do, do. But, you have to take time out to rejuvenate yourself,” she said.

To that end, Haddon finds meditation and yoga essential, and encourages other women to follow suit.

Here’re cheap, good and reputable internet stores. No prescription online pharmacy helps out you avoid expensive errors when you obtain no rx remedies, medications online from a no prescription shop.

The next scene opens with a Discovery Channel moment, which impels me to…

It is EXACTLY how I envisioned it. We see an eagle or a falcon soaring through the sky, high above the island, strong, graceful, the wind rushing through its wings.

In my Freedom to Fly CD, I guide people to imagine doing exactly the same thing. People have written telling me how empowered and free it is because it feels just like flying in a dream – except that they are even more aware of the experience. And then the bird lands on top of an old tree, something that’s also done in the CD.

In fact, here’s an excerpt, “Continue floating down to just above the trees and land on the highest limb. Perceive your grasp moving down the limb, to the trunk of the tree, and then follow the roots as they continue deep into the ground. It is this balance which is natural to you. So immensely strong and grounded through the roots of the tree and yet so graceful, blowing gently in the wind.”

What happens is that all the positive qualities of the bird, all the positive qualities of flying strong and free, in addition to the incredible eyesight of a bird (thus increased insight and clairvoyance), are strengthened in the listener.

The feedback from this CD has been overwhelmingly positive. You can listen for free via streaming audio by clicking here and you can click here for more information.

I apologize for the digression. I couldn’t help it. I saw the eagle flying and it was just so exactly like I’ve imagined.

Clubs have collected lots of data on their club-oriented software. In some cases, hard copies are created with reams of printouts sitting on shelves — or worse, in offsite storage facilities. The data starts with club financials, and grows to membership data and then to usage. The lesson is that this data only becomes information when it is actually used.

Staff as the customer

In customer service concepts, we often express our company’s goals (or even mission statement) in terms of the end user: the member. The other aspect of customer service is the need to serve the internal customer: your staff members.

If the general manager needs to know her bottom-line results for last month, she is often reliant on the timeliness and accuracy of the club’s controller to get her that information.

The customer in this case is the general manager; she wants certain information to manage the club. So, this data needs to be delivered in a timely manner. It also needs to be in a format ideal for the recipient (not for the computer or outside accounting firm).

Severity and Treatment
The severity of the scoliosis is measured by degrees of curvature, which can range from extremely slight at 5 degrees, to extremely severe at 90 degrees. Slight curves do not send up warning flares to doctors. However, Carissa Havrilko’s curve reached 71 degrees, which is a very noticeable and progressing curve.

“A 9-year-old is still growing, so chances are a five-degree curve has very little possibility statistically of getting much worse. But the problem is that I don’t know which it is going to be. I can’t guarantee you in larger degrees that [it] won’t progress or get worse,” Haynes said. In those cases, monitoring the curve is often as far as treatment goes.

“We monitor the curve as the child is growing, but most curves will stop before they get to be 25 degrees. However, if the child is still growing and the curve does reach 25 degrees, we treat it with a brace. That will stop the curve where it is, but it won’t correct it,” Renshaw said.

The problems arise when larger curves are detected. A twisting spine can cause deformity in appearance, back pain and, if extremely severe, can compress and even puncture the lungs. Braces are usually recommended for curves that are less than 50 degrees.

“We used to have these braces with a neck collar that would just go around the chest and the neckline. The ones we have now are ‘low profile braces:’ much smaller, lighter weight, and really less cumbersome because they stop below the armpits,” he said. “They just have to wear it until they finish growing at 14 to 16 years of age.”

While a brace can keep a curve from getting worse, only surgery can help straighten the spine.

“We usually recommend doing surgery to prevent the curve from worsening and to correct it as much as possible, but mainly to preclude the worse thing that is inevitable. Most people would recommend surgery when it gets into the 50 degree,” Haynes said.

Scoliosis surgery involves placing two metal rods along the back part of the spine and attaching them to various vertebrae, hooks, screws or wires.

“It does straighten the spine and that’s permanent,” Renshaw said.

Other Options
There are other venues for dealing with scoliosis as well. Chiropractors view scoliosis differently from orthopedic doctors.

“Oftentimes, people come in with complaints about other things, such as in their neck or back, and don’t even realize they have scoliosis. We go well beyond the typical generalized orthopedic test. We’re looking for the cause, to find something within spinal column itself, to see if there is what we call a bio-mechanical fixation,” explained Keith Overland, D.C., a chiropractor in Norwalk, Conn.

Overland categorizes scoliosis into two types: functional and structural. “The functional type may be based on a short leg, a muscle contraction, or some kind of muscular splinting. It may be sports-related. If someone is so dominant on one side of his or her body, it will develop a curvature. Structural scoliosis is the kind you’re born with.”

Chiropractors offer varying treatments to help alleviate pain and maintain flexibility, according to Overland, including exercises, manipulation, electrical stimulation of the muscles and braces. If the curvature is severe, Overland will refer the patient to an orthopedic surgeon for bracing.

“I refer 15 [percent] to 25 percent of my patients to pediatric orthopedists. If something is structural and beyond what is appropriate, and I can’t help them, I have no problem doing that,” he said.

But orthopedists remain skeptical about the modality or physical treatment of the disorder.

“There is no evidence that anything other than bracing will prevent the curve from progressing. The modality, things like exercises or manipulation, don’t have any value from keeping a curve from getting worse,” Haynes said. “You have to remember, since 90 percent of those kids we see will have no progression of their curves anyway, that whatever you do, it doesn’t make any difference either way. The problem comes in if you try other treatments and wait too long. For, if the curve keeps progressing in the meanwhile, you may be looking at surgery rather than a brace.”

“Bracing is effective and it does prevent further curvature,” Overland said. “All I’m saying is, when you look at a diagnosis such as scoliosis, you should look at all the treatment options. Too often, you will be directed toward one particular treatment. A medical doctor may guide someone toward the medical approach; a chiropractor just toward chiropractic. Be open to investigating a variety of treatment options, or the best combination of treatments.”

When Carissa Havrilko leaned over, her mother saw a barely noticeable hump.

“If she hadn’t been bending forward, I wouldn’t have noticed it at all,” said Cindy Havrilko from Shelton, Conn., who is thankful that her daughter’s pediatrician at the time noticed the scoliosis and suggested a specialist. He fitted her for a brace, and Havrilko even sought help from a chiropractor.

That was two years ago. Carissa, now 12, is undergoing surgery to straighten her spine, which has progressed in curvature. “Now it’s very noticeable. She’s at the age where it’s making her self-conscious. It’s just going to keep progressing.”

Connecticut state law requires scoliosis testing in schools. However, by the time the checkup occurred, Havrilko had already been diagnosed. But like so many other girls in her age group — prepubescent — she never complained of a backache or other physical pain.

“Most of the time, the kids have no symptoms at all. The spine is just as strong as a normal spine, and they’re active, normal and healthy kids. The problems start if they don’t treat it,” explained Thomas Renshaw, M.D., professor of orthopedic surgery at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn., and orthopedic surgeon for 20 years. “There may not even be back pain until the curve has gotten so severe that it has to be corrected surgically.”

Scoliosis is the abnormal curving of the spine in a lateral (away from the middle) direction. As it curves, it also twists, which accounted for the protrusion on Carissa Havrilko’s back. While a person can be born with malformed vertebrae that cause the curving, other cases are called idiopathic (cause unknown) scoliosis and the curve appears before puberty. And at that age, girls are statistically more prone to scoliosis (as much as 7 to 1).

“It’s most common toward the end of the first decade of life, around age 9 to 12 or 13, or before the young girl has her first period, when most of this type of scoliosis starts. Nobody has been able to figure out why. There is nothing that’s really been shown to be the cause,” said Renshaw, Carissa’s doctor.

“There isn’t any type of warning that it’s going to develop,” agreed Richard Haynes, M.D., chief of staff at Shriners Hospital in Houston, Texas, and a surgeon specializing in pediatric orthopedic surgery for 30 years. “However, there is the hereditary component. It occurs in families with a history of scoliosis. If mother or father has it, the children have a much greater chance of having it as well.”

Should you use RPE with your clients? Like target heart rate, RPE has both strengths and weaknesses. Many personal trainers and exercise instructors use both target heart rate and RPE, hoping that one or both will connect with the wide range of clients they see. In your decisions on how to prescribe exercise intensity, consider the following questions:

Do clients have an exercise threshold that puts them at a level that is contraindicated? If you are prescribing exercise in a setting where this is often the case, such as in a cardiac rehab program, stringent HR monitoring takes center stage as an intensity indicator. Patients new to exercise (as well as their health care providers and trainers) may be especially nervous about relying on subjective measures such as RPE. If you use RPE along with HR, over time these clients will learn to associate certain signals with their prescribed exercise intensity. Once they are exercising on their own, they can use these signals and may need to monitor their HRs less frequently.

Are you asking clients to monitor intensity in a group exercise setting? Some people, especially those new to exercise, may have difficulty perceiving exertion when distracted. People new to a group exercise class may be so involved in following the leader’s instructions, comparing themselves to other participants, worrying about how they’re doing, listening to the music and so forth, that they get swept up in the spirit of the class with little regard for their individual well-being.

The good news is that distractions have less effect at higher intensities. In other words, if distracted clients reach high exercise intensities, they will probably realize they are overdoing it and slow down. RPE can be used effectively in a group setting with experienced exercisers who have been instructed in its use.

Is RPE appropriate for all exercise modes? The Borg scale was designed primarily for steady state, aerobic activities. It has not been adapted for resistance training, stretching or interval-type work.

Are clients reproducing the correct exercise intensity when using RPE? Once clients have been instructed in the use of RPE, monitor a few sessions, taking HRs to confirm the accuracy of exercise intensity

Carpet can show dirt and the wear and tear of high traffic more easily than most other types of flooring, so it is vital to maintain a regular cleaning schedule for your carpeted areas. Lees in Greensboro, N.C., a manufacturer of carpeting and a division of Burlington Industries, has the following recommendations for care of its carpeting:

Daily.

* Provide walk-off/wipe-off areas at all building entrances.

* Vacuum daily in high-traffic areas with a dual-motor upright vacuum that has a beater bar or double row of brushes with high suction. Make sure the high/low setting is appropriate for your floor. Vacuum with slow, deliberate strokes, and make a minimum of four passes across each area to effectively remove all dirt.

Regularly. Perform a hot-water extraction at least four times a year for high-traffic areas. Make sure the water temperature does not exceed 160 degress Fahrenheit, use manufacturer-recommended cleaning solutions and follow all directions on solution mixtures. Make three dry passes with the extraction equipment after the last wet pass. A pile lifter vacuum removes deeply embedded soil and is especially helpful prior to carpet cleaning.

Problem areas. React to all spills as quickly as possible, and check for stains during daily vacuuming. If the spill is dry, vacuum it first. Use a spoon to scape it if it is caked in. If it is wet, scrape up or use an extractor. Next, blot the spot with cold water by pressing downward (not in a circular motion) with a cotton towel or suction block, starting from the outer edges of the stain. Continue pressing down until the stain is removed. If water alone does not work, use a cleaning product recommended by the manufacturer, and follow with a water rinse. Blot carpet until area is as dry as possible, and leave a stack of towels with a heavy object on them on the wet area overnight.

The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), a national trade association located in Dalton, Ga., that represents manufacturers and suppliers, states that, “Establishing and committing to a routine maintenance plan is a key factor in prolonging the life and appearance of your carpet and maintaining a healthy indoor environment.”

Its cleaning recommendations are similar to those of Lees, and it also recommends periodic dry extraction, dry foam and rotary shampoo cleaning methods.

CRI also warns to always pretest cleaning detergents on carpet before use. Some may bleach carpet fibers. Also, some carpets come with a stain protector. If not, topical stain treatments are available, and need to reapplied about every five years.

All serious road warriors begin their voyages with the most honourable intentions.

Before leaving, they load up necessary files, documents and e-mail messages. They plot a strategy to use uninterrupted time in the air to work on outstanding projects that have piled up.

Of course, soon after takeoff, reality sets in. They’ve worked a long hard day, put in their time and need a rest. A glass of wine, a reclining seat, the window and blue sky — they’re ready to take a break.

But here lies the problem: Road warriors have already seen the airline movie, listened to the audio channels and are tired of reading a book. That’s why on an increasing number of flights, you’ll find serious travellers equipping themselves with two of the hottest technologies — portable DVD (digital video disc) and MP3 players.

You can find quite a few innovative portable DVD players on the market, but they involve carrying around some extra hardware. That is why so many executives equip their laptop computers with a built-in DVD-ROM feature rather than a regular CD-ROM player.

Over the past few months, I’ve had the pleasure of travelling with an IBM Thinkpad A20. Prior to leaving on a trip, I’ll visit a local movie store and rent a few DVDs to take with me. I can then view one on my laptop, and listen through my headphones, turning the computer into a portable theatre.

One problem for road warriors is that they often don’t get a chance to finish watching a movie en route. To get around that, some of them have used a program from the Internet called DeCSS, which lets them copy a movie to their hard drive, so they can still watch it after returning the DVD to the store.

Keep in mind that they need lots of hard disk space on their laptop to do this, as a movie takes up about eight gigabytes. But there is another, more serious concern: The program is technically illegal in the United States. It breaks the encryption on a DVD movie, hence violating provisions of the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Not surprisingly, the product has made Hollywood executives apoplectic, fearing people may use the program to make illegal copies of DVDs. A number of lawsuits have been launched over the program.

The other new device that will appeal to the road warrior is Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox. Available for $499 (U.S.), it’s an MP3 player that is really a computer with a tiny 6.4-gigabyte hard drive built in.

The size of a portable CD player, it lets you take with you about 100 hours of music, or several thousand songs, enough to keep you entertained for long periods of time. Transfer music from your CDs to the jukebox before you go, and once you are in flight, plug in your headphones, settle back and listen to your own choice of music.

The only problem with such tools is the continuing issue of battery life. We can only hope that the airlines get the hint that road warriors are becoming their own entertainers and want the juice required.

Calling card is convenient, effective method to save on your long distance phone calls. Internet shop offers you a wide range of prepaid phone card to many countries. Discover how to save money, energy, time easily on the this online store.

In a fast-paced society such as ours, people don’t like to wait. In fact, waiting in lines and sitting in traffic cause people stress on a daily basis. But the marketing staff at the Cooper Fitness Center found a way to defy human nature and make the idea of waiting actually seem appealing.

In an effort to boost its image, the club launched a three-month marketing campaign with the goal of establishing a waiting list for prospective members. Explains Marketing Associate Kathryn Wilson, “A membership cap represents prestige and establishes us as an elite organization. People want to feel a sense of belonging to a premier facility.” Within three months, the club added 100 more members than its initial goal of 300, and generated $80,000 in revenue.

“Public perception of membership value drove these sales,” Wilson says, adding that current members became more satisfied, knowing that the waiting list was actually helping preserve customer service. Member retention increased as a result, enabling the facility to quickly build a list of enthusiastic prospects.

The facility promoted the planned membership cap in its bi-monthly newsletter, as well as in promotional flyers. Members were invited to list the names and phone numbers of family and friends interested in joining the facility before the wait began. Those who provided a list of referrals received a 25th Anniversary Cooper Fitness Center T-shirt, and were entered into a drawing to win a gift certificate and free airline ticket. According to Wilson, the facility expects to maintain a maximum wait of four months to join.
